Meet our Student Committee
What does the Committee do?
The purpose of the committee is to foster a community environment within the student body of the department across all sites and to encourage communication and feedback between students and staff. The student committee organises social events for DPhil and MRes students throughout the year as well as organising induction/welcome events for new students.The Welfare Reps offer students a peer-based outlet and can provide information on University resources. Where possible these reps will have received Peer Support training and can offer a confidential support network.
As a department we pride ourselves on the vast amount of opportunities available to our students. For example, at our annual Away Days which entail both fun, team building activities and a chance to get involved with strategic goal setting.
Two of our DPhil Students, Bethan Swift and Teresa Vilanova Perez have had the fantastic opportunity carry out placement period with external organisations, you read read what they have said below.
Teresa's placement at Astorg Partners
"With regards of my job placement; this has been a 6-month placement as an investment analyst at a private equity firm in London, Astorg Partners, and I joined the healthcare teams and helped out with the due diligence prior to buying out a company.
I got to apply my scientific background to assess the attractiveness of the target companies while I learned the financial skills required for the deals, including carrying out commercial due diligence with Bain & Company. I gained hands-on experience with different companies within the vast healthcare sector (including pharma, services, life science tools and medical devices) and was involved in the entirety of a live deal process, starting from concept clearance all the way up to submitting a non-binding offer to the holding fund.
I was able to get a very interesting insight of the demanding and fast-paced nature of a job in the city, and how someone with my background can fit and be useful to the finance ecosystem."
Bethan's placement at UNICEF
"I spent 3 months at UNICEF HQ as a Nutrition Specialist in the Programme Division in the summer of the second year of my DPhil. I was tasked with evaluating the NutriDash system, which provides country, regional and global data on several nutrition indicators. This involved producing and disseminating a questionnaire to UNICEF country office colleagues, interviewing internal and external (e.g., CDC, WHO) stakeholders to gather views and opinions of the system and analysing this data to produce a peer-reviewed publication.
The role gave me a break from my DPhil studies and allowed me to see how the skills I had gained could be transferred to a completely different field. I had the chance to attend various unit meetings, seminars and learned how a large international organisation, such as UNICEF, operates. I returned to my DPhil motivated and excited to finish my final year."
We also encourage our students to engage with the public and share their research on our social platforms such as Twitter and YouTube. Our Twitter takeovers allow our students to use their voice for a day and explain their current research topics. You can see two such Twitter threads below where DPhil student Nina was our Champion for World Ovarian Cancer Day and DPhil student Hussam was our Champion for World Breastfeeding Week. They both did a great job showcasing their work!
MSc in Clinical Embryology Course
This one-year, residential, taught MSc aims to provide graduates from either a scientific or clinical background with advanced theoretical and practical understanding of human reproductive biology, embryology, infertility and assisted reproductive technology (ART).
Our course includes a considerable laboratory practical component. Our students learn skills and techniques directly relevant to ART, as well as a range of ‘traditional’ and ‘cutting edge’ laboratory techniques common to scientific research. A particular strength of our programme is the fact that each of our students is individually trained in gamete manipulation/injection and infra-red laser embryo biopsy.”
The course is based at the Institute of Reproductive Sciences (IRS) alongside Oxford Fertility at the Oxford Business Park.

In a record breaking year for the Postgrad Awards 2021, DPhil student Tolu Awoyemi wins PhD Student of the Year. The award recognises the individual PhD student who has become an excellent and inquisitive researcher, who is an integral part of their research group, someone who encourages and supports more junior members of the team, and works alongside the research community more widely.
