Edie Guo

HBSc, MSc (Oxon)

DPhil Student

  • PI Group: Dr Karl Morten

Edie is a fourth-year DPhil candidate at the University of Oxford jointly supervised by the Department of Women’s and Reproductive Health and Department of Engineering. She grew up in a small town outside Vancouver, Canada, and went to high school in Shanghai. Following her undergraduate studies in physiology and global health, Edie finished her MSc in Clinical Embryology at the University of Oxford.

As a scientist, Edie worked on microplastic research in undergrad, producing quantification methods that were used by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and papers that were used as key evidence for California's microplastic pollution legislation, which has since influenced policies in other US states. Given the aftermath of COVID-19, Edie is studying myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS), Long COVID, and Chronic Lyme Disease in an attempt to help patients who suffer greatly from these post-acute infection sequelae.

Outside of her studies, Edie is very involved with the community, starting her first NGO at 15, represented over 55,000 students on the board of University of Toronto, and served as MCR (graduate student body) President at St Hugh’s College. She has also been a ballet dancer for 14 years.
