Course overview
Introduction
This one-year, residential-taught Masters course aims to provide graduates from either a scientific or clinical background with advanced theoretical and practical understanding of human reproductive biology, embryology, infertility and assisted reproductive technology (ART).
The course provides intensive, hands-on practical training in essential laboratory skills and the sophisticated gamete micromanipulation techniques associated with ART.

We place significant emphasis on providing hands-on practical training in a range of laboratory techniques associated with scientific research, clinical diagnosis, or ART; including vitrification, gamete micromanipulation and infra-red laser biopsy.

Teaching & Learning
The course is delivered by award-winning teaching staff from the Nuffield Department of Women's & Reproductive Health. A variety of teaching methods are employed to enhance and optimise student learning, including:
- Class lectures
- Group tutorials
- Laboratory practical classes
- In-house demonstrations by visiting companies
- Lectures from world-leading visiting scientists and clinicians
Regular problem-based learning (PBL) techniques allow the class to analyse and research a given topic in small groups. Findings are presented and discussed with teaching staff.
Our course places special emphasis on the development of practical laboratory skills, especially those applicable to research in the reproductive sciences, ART and the routine duties of a clinical embryologist.
Our students are also given the opportunity to observe clinical procedures in TFP Oxford Fertility’s IVF laboratory for at least one day during the course, and shadow a senior clinician during patient consultations.
Course structure
Our Master’s course is carefully structured to provide both breadth and depth in reproductive science and its clinical applications. The programme runs over one academic year (October–September) and follows Oxford’s three terms: Michaelmas, Hilary and Trinity.
In the first two terms, you will complete ten taught modules that build from essential biological principles of reproductive science and laboratory skills to advanced training in infertility and assisted reproductive technologies. The final term is dedicated to an extended research project, giving you the opportunity to apply your knowledge in a real-world research environment.
Through this combination of lectures, seminars, practical classes, and independent study, you will gain the skills and experience needed to progress in both academic and professional settings.
Assessments take a variety of forms, including closed-book examinations, a library-based extended essay and a dissertation with a short oral examination. Opportunities for formative feedback are also built in to support your development.
