Pedro Melo
MD PhD MRCOG
- Senior Clinical Research Fellow in Women's and Reproductive Health
- Honorary Consultant Gynaecologist and Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine
Pedro studied medicine in Lisbon and Paris before moving to Oxford for postgraduate training. He completed a master's in Clinical Embryology with distinction at the University of Oxford, followed by a PhD in Reproductive Medicine with Arri Coomarasamy at the University of Birmingham. He returned to Oxford in 2022 to complete subspecialty training in reproductive medicine alongside a NIHR academic clinical lectureship in obstetrics and gynaecology, collaborating with the Granne, Becker and Williams groups at NDWRH.
In 2025, Pedro was appointed Senior Clinical Research Fellow in Women's and Reproductive Health and Honorary Consultant Gynaecologist & Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine. His clinical practice at Oxford University Hospitals covers infertility, early pregnancy, recurrent miscarriage, fertility preservation and endometriosis. He also practises assisted conception at TFP Oxford Fertility.
Pedro's research focuses on evidence synthesis and clinical studies in infertility and miscarriage. He is the national clinical coordinator for the NIHR-funded LOCI randomised trial, which compared letrozole versus clomifene, with or without metformin, for the treatment of anovulatory infertility in people with polycystic ovary syndrome. He is also the chief investigator for the OxLuPIn study, which investigates the impact of luteal dysfunction on placental maladaptation and preeclampsia.
At Oxford, Pedro is the teaching associate for Women's and Reproductive Health at Green Templeton College. In 2023, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recognised his research with the Florence and William Blair Bell Fellowship.
