An overview of the online MSc in Global Womens Health course curriculum, including compulsory and elective modules.
Course framework
This innovative two-year online course begins each September and follows the three University of Oxford terms:
- Michaelmas
- Hilary
- Trinity
Delivered primarily online, the programme also includes two one-week residentials at the beginning of the first and second year. This will be held in one of the most beautiful college’s in Oxford - St Hilda’s.
In the first year, students complete a series of core modules, while the second year combines further core teaching with a choice of elective options to tailor the learning experience.
The two-year MSc course finalises with completion of a dissertation on a research question chosen by the student.
The curriculum
Year one
- Residential 1: Introduction to Global Women’s Health
- Core Module 1: Sexual & Reproductive Health and rights (SRHR)
- Core Module 2: Maternal & Neonatal Health (MNH)
- Core Module 3: Women’s health: Climate, Conflict & Migration (CC&M)
- Core Module 4: Advocacy, Leadership, Policy & Practice for Women & Girls (P&P)
Year two
- Residential 2: Introduction to Research Skills and Dissertation
- Core Module 5: Integrated Research Skills for Global Women’s Health
Option Modules (choose from):
- Module 6: Women’s Mental Health: Global Challenges
- Module7: Women and Cancer: The Global Picture
- Module 8: Innovation in Women’s Health
- Module 9: Menstrual Disorders: Global Trends and Solutions
- Module 10: Infertility: A Global Perspective
- Module 11: Practical Skills in Obstetric Ultrasound with Certification*
*The Obstetric Ultrasound module requires a four-week residential. This is only open to students with a clinical background, and admission is restricted and competitive.
Please note: The structure of this Master’s programme, including the timing of individual modules, are subject to change. Modules may be re-sequenced (for example, a module currently offered in Year Two may be delivered in Year One) in response to staff expertise, emerging research, or market and academic demands. These adjustments ensure the programme remains current, responsive, and of the highest academic quality.
Course Structure and Assessment
Each academic year comprises three terms:
- Michaelmas Term: 11 weeks
- Hilary Term: 8 weeks
- Trinity Term: 8 weeks
Total across two years: 54 weeks
Study Commitment:
- Modules run for 4–10 weeks each, with an average workload of 20 hours per week (50% FTE).
Teaching Methods:
- Recorded lectures
- Live discussions
- Problem-based learning (group and individual)
- Guided and independent reading
Assessment:
All modules include formative and summative assessments, which can be completed remotely. The programme concludes with a 6,000-word dissertation and a poster presentation on a research topic of the student’s choice.
