Improving pregnancy outcomes through analysis of national registry data (Tommy’s Net) (Dr Pedro Melo)
PROJECT TITLE
Developing a diagnostic framework to understand and reduce maternity disparities
SUPERVISORS
- Dr Pedro Melo
- Professor Arri Coomarasamy
- Professor Adam Devall (University of Birmingham)
DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
Tommy’s Net is a national electronic database that collects detailed, longitudinal data from women and couples affected by miscarriage across the UK. It integrates clinical, demographic, and health behaviour data from over 3,000 participants and supports the work of the Tommy’s National Centre for Miscarriage Research.
This DPhil project will use Tommy’s Net to explore modifiable predictors of miscarriage and to develop or validate risk models and digital tools that can inform future care and research.
Recent analyses from Tommy’s Net have shown that periconceptual diet affects the risk of miscarriage. Building on these findings, the student will investigate additional domains including paternal factors, socioeconomic status, environmental exposures, and digital health behaviours.
The project will use advanced epidemiological and statistical techniques (e.g. causal inference, DAGs, multivariable modelling, and machine learning) to analyse large-scale, real-world datasets and generate clinically actionable insights.
Outputs will include peer-reviewed publications, data-driven risk models, and translational tools to improve miscarriage prevention and counselling.
TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
Students will receive training in statistical programming, database management, and applied epidemiology. They will also develop skills in patient and public involvement, scientific writing, and interdisciplinary collaboration through Tommy’s centres in Oxford and Birmingham.
Funding Information
Funded by the Tommy’s Charity. We will additionally support students in their application for independent scholarships.
