Katie Beirns

DPhil Student

  • PI group: Dr Karl Morten

I joined the Nuffield Department of Women's and Reproduction Health in October 2023 to complete a DPhil in partnership with the Rosalind Franklin Institute. Supervised by Dr Karl Morten (NDWRH), Dr Judy Kim (Franklin/ Oxford Department of Materials) and Dr Brian Caffrey (Franklin), my project aims to study dynamics of the mitochondrial electron transport chain using liquid phase electron microscopy. I hope to investigate how phenotypic and dynamic variations in the electron transport chain affects oxidative phosphorylation, linking form with function of healthy vs dysregulated mitochondria.

Prior to starting my DPhil, I completed a BSc in medical biochemistry at the University of Leeds, followed by completing an MSc in biochemistry at the University of Manchester.
