Unlocking the Challenge of Multiple Health Conditions in Pregnancy
A WRH Research Group operates within our department's Data Science theme and is run by Dr. Chris Yau.
The MuM-PreDiCT Project
Why this project is important?
Some women live with two or more long-term health conditions. They may experience difficulties managing several health conditions and these challenges may increase during pregnancy. With MuM-PreDiCT we aim to provide deeper understanding of what makes some pregnant women more likely to have two or more long-term health conditions and how this affects them and their children.
How the MuM-PreDiCT project help
In this project, eight UK universities spanning England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland are coming together and using health data produced in each of the four nations to understand the patterns and causes of multiple long-term conditions in pregnant women. The aim is to help clinicians improve health services and tailor them to these women’s specific needs.
MuM-PreDiCT is led by PI Professor Christopher Yau and funded by the Medical Research Council UK.

About the research project
As part of the research collaboration, the Oxford team led by Professor Christopher Yau, is developing computer algorithms to analyse the GP records of half a million women who have experienced pregnancy and have two or more long-term health conditions.
These algorithms are helping us to identify groups of women with similar patterns of health conditions that could benefit from specific health interventions. We are also developing algorithms that could be helpful to clinicians and women to understand their future risks of acquiring health conditions which could prompt earlier interventions.
Using state-of-the-art data science techniques applied to very large data sets, we are learning more about the complex and varied health conditions that pregnant women possess, and in particular we are raising awareness of rare combinations of conditions that may previously have not been attended to. - Professor Christopher Yau
UPDATE: How our research is going?
October 2023
The Oxford team have been awarded further funding from EPSRC to build upon their MuM-Predict work and create clinical prediction foundation models using large language model technology.
