Professor Terry Dwyer is stepping down from his role as Executive Director of The George Institute for Global Health at the University of Oxford to focus on his research into children’s cancer and childhood risk factors for heart disease and cancer in adults.

Professor Terry Dwyer is stepping down from his role as Executive Director of The George Institute for Global Health at the University of Oxford to focus on his research into children’s cancer and childhood risk factors for heart disease and cancer in adults.

Professor Robyn Norton, Principal Director of The George Institute for Global Health, will be Acting Executive Director until a new Executive Director is appointed.

Under Professor Dwyer’s leadership since 2014, The George Institute at Oxford has grown substantially, with an expansion in staff, competitive research funding and high-impact publications. Professor Dwyer also oversaw the Institute’s move to the Nuffield Department of Women’s and Reproductive Health.

‘We are deeply appreciative of Terry’s leadership of the Institute in the UK over this period, as well as his own academic outputs and his contributions to the academic growth of the UK team,’ said Professor Norton.

Under University of Oxford rules, Professor Dwyer was due to retire from his role as Executive Director in 2019. He will continue to work with The George Institute at Oxford as Professor of Epidemiology, strengthening and extending his research programme.  His work is an important and relatively new area for the Institute, with the potential to impact the health of millions of children and adults globally.

‘We are committed to continuing to build the UK office, based on the strong foundation that Terry has nurtured during his time as Executive Director, and we look forward to the increasing impact of the Institute in Oxford, both in the UK and globally,’ said Professor Norton.

Recruitment for a new Executive Director will commence shortly. Professor Norton previously served as the Executive Director for The George Institute, UK when it was initially established in 2010. She is Professor of Global Health and Oxford Martin Senior Fellow at the University of Oxford, and Professor of Public Health in the Faculty of Medicine, UNSW Sydney.
