Abstract:

Recent high-profile developments in artificial intelligence (AI) have had a rare disruptive and transformative impact both in science and society. In this talk, I will give a brief history of AI and chart a number of critical advances that have enabled the current state-of-the-art technologies in AI. I will then discuss the arguments for and against the belief that current AI models are capable of reasoning and the necessity to embed strong scientific principles in the application of AI.
