Nynke van Polanen

Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Mitochondrial Disease

I studied Nutrition and Health at the Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands and completed my MSc program with the specialisation Molecular Nutrition and Toxicology. My MSc thesis was about studying mitochondrial dynamics in C2C12 myoblasts and for my MSc internship I went abroad to the Scherer's lab at the University of Texas Southwestern, USA. There, I studied the effects of adiponectin on tubular epithelial cell metabolism in mice.

My PhD at the Diabetes and Metabolism Research Group at the Maastricht University was focused on myocellular lipid droplets in relation to insulin sensitivity. I used fluorescent microscopy techniques to study lipid storage and high-resolution respirometry to study mitochondrial function in human skeletal muscle.

Following my PhD, I joined professor Jo Poulton's group to perform postdoctoral research in mitochondrial diseases.
