How You Will Learn
Our MSc programme is primarily delivered online, led by the senior education team within the Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health and supported by world-leading external lecturers. You'll engage in a dynamic virtual learning environment through:
- Remote lectures and seminars led by Oxford academics and visiting experts.
- Small-group online tutorials and problem-based learning sessions tackling real-world challenges.
- Weekly live group discussions, designed to build your critical thinking and presentation skills.
- Yearly one-week residential, at St Hilda's College in Oxford

Support and Mentoring
You will be supported throughout your MSc by a dedicated teaching team. Each student is allocated a Departmental Mentor (a senior academic or clinician) who provides individual guidance on coursework, exams, and career planning.
The Course Director monitors your progress and provides feedback each term. In addition to Departmental mentoring, every student is allocated a place at St Hilda’s College, where dedicated College advisors and tutors provide further guidance and academic support.
Our staff are accredited by national bodies such as the Higher Education Academy, ensuring our teaching is innovative, inclusive, and student-focused.

Learn from Oxford, Study from Anywhere
As an online programme, the MSc in Global Women’s Health offers the same academic rigour as our courses based in Oxford, but with the flexibility to study from anywhere in the world. Learning is delivered through interactive lectures, online seminars, discussion forums, and collaborative group projects.
Case studies and problem-based learning are used to connect theory with practice, encouraging you to critically evaluate health systems, policies, and interventions from a global perspective.

Core Teaching staff
Our team has extensive experience in global women’s health, with each module led by an Oxford expert and co-led by an international expert to ensure a truly global perspective. Our staff are proactive in higher education pedagogy, and we take active steps to design our curriculum to provide the best possible online experience.
We firmly believe in understanding how our students learn and apply this knowledge directly. The University’s medical sciences division, with its extensive in online learning, is directly involved in developing this course.
Director of the MSc in Global Women’s Health
Senior Lecturer and Research Fellow Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust
Dr Anita Makins is the Director of the MSc in Global Women’s Health, leading the design and delivery of this new online programme (launching September 2025). A Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, she has extensive experience working in Sub-Saharan Africa and South East Asia with NGOs, Ministries of Health, FIGO and the WHO. She is a founding member and lead for Women’s Health in the University of Oxford’s Global Surgery Group and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate doctors and midwives both in Oxford and internationally.
She supervises Oxford medical students and DPhil students, and regularly lectures on global health policy, maternal care, and contraception. Dr Makins’ expertise ensures that MSc students gain an academically rigorous and globally relevant perspective on women’s health.

MSc in Clinical Embryology
