Montserrat Vallet Buisan

DPhil Student

  • PI group: Dr Kevin Coward

I am a second year DPhil student and graduate of the MSc in Clinical Embryology, and I work at the Institute of Reproductive Sciences under the supervision of Dr. Kevin Coward.

Prior to attending Oxford I studied Biomedical Sciences at the University of Barcelona. During that time, I worked as an undergraduate student at the Barcelona Institute of Molecular Biology – Spanish National Research Council (IBMB-CSIC) where, using Drosophila melanogaster as a model, we researched the mechanisms that control early animal development.

My DPhil research focuses on developing an exosome-based non-invasive biotherapeutic delivery system to mammalian sperm and embryos. This novel tool has the potential to be used for reproductive purposes and help treat fertility-associated problems.

I've received a grant from the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI) aimed at promoting scientific culture in Catalonia. To this end, I've created Instagram and TikTok profiles (@reprociencia) where I post content regarding sexual and reproductive health, as well as recounting the day-to-day life of a DPhil student.

Succesful internalisation of BODIPY-labelled exosomes by embryos

BODIPY-labelled HEK293T cell-derived exosomes were successfully internalised by 8-cell embryos after direct injection. Above, representative 8-cell embryo injected with 10µl of a 50/50 mixture of BODIPY-labelled exosomes/PVP under blue and green fluorescence using Lamp Fluorescence Microscopy.
